Winter Backpacking Trip 3.0, Algonquin Park, Snow Structures
Leave Algonquin Park's, Western Uplands Backpacking Trail parking lot (off of Hwy 60) at 8 am, Saturday, Feb. 12. Hike for exactly 4.4 km to Maple Leaf Lake. Setup camp. Build proof of concept snow shelter(s). Return Sunday afternoon forever changed.
The hiking portion is shorter than last time because the focus is on creating snow shelter(s) for the night; a quinzee, an igloo, choice is yours. Bring a snow shovel. Bring your tent as a backup, or if weirded by snow structures. Bring party flavors if you'd rather just build a snow man.
Logistics:
The last two "Winter Backpacking Trips" involved some form of carpooling with Huntsville's Econolodge serving as base camp Friday night. Alternatively, do your own thing, meet us at 8 am.
Because we set out before the Algonquin Park office opens Saturday, Feb 12, attendees need to register ahead of time by phoning for a backcountry permit ($11.75/person/night). Call (705) 633-5583 or (705) 633-5572.
The weather forecast for Huntsville this weekend is balmy; highs of -2 C, lows of only -11 C. You have no excuse. Get your me in this meetup!
