Algonquin Park backcountry canoe trip- Canoe Lake circuit

Fri, Aug 29, 2014 · 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM · Algonquin Provincial Park

For this long weekend we will do the Canoe Lake circuit (blue line on map), starting off at the Portage store, north on HWY 60. It will be an anticlockwise loop through Joe lake, Burnt Island lake, Tom thomson lake, teepee lake then back to Canoe lake. There are various channels and lakes to explore maybe catch view of some wildlife.

Schedule:

Friday night arrive at the park 7pm'ish and camp at Tea lake campground. it's a long weekend, so traffic will be heavy on HWY400.

Saturday start off early 9am'ish, get the canoes from the Portage store (for those renting), and put in the water right there on Canoe lake. Camp on Burnt island lake. lots of islands and bays to explore in there

Sunday camp on Tom Thomson lake.

Monday paddle back to Canoe lake and arrive around 1pm'ish to the parking lot

There are 13 portages, with longest at 680m and shortest only 20m. (the itinerary is off Chapter 1 of Kevin Callan's book Paddlers guide to Algonquin park)

Skill level: suitable for novice

distance: 4 hr drive from KW

Canoe & gear rental: Portage store

http://www.portagestore.com/

I suggest you pick a light kevlar canoe at least 15', $36.95/day. will need to rent for 3 days. (this trip is not suitable for kayaks)

Park fees: $11.75/person/night

parking for extra vehicles $15/day (good idea to carpool!)

Approx cost per person: between $30-90 (depending on what you have, what you rent and how you travel).

I will be collecting $35 upfront to pay for the campsite and backcountry fees.

if you are not familiar with backcountry camping or don't know what to bring as gear, let me know. there also a checklist of items & tips for beginners that Tim posted on the shared folder.

if you are interested but find that the event is full, you can join the waiting list. there are almost always last minute dropouts and additions.
