Thanksgiving Backpacking in Algonquin
Hi everyone. It is fall again. Sure the weather is cool, the lakes grow cold, the days are short, but the mosquitoes are gone...hopefully. ;)
As happens around this time every year I am leading my Thanksgiving weekend trip. This year will be a bit different. In my attempt to see all of the the Western Uplands Trail this years route will cover another 10KM on day to see seldom visited parts of the park.
Given the distances this trail plans to cover everyone will need to be in fairly good condition. The days are only 12 hours long meaning we will have to move fairly efficiently. If you are fairly new to backpacking this is could also be a poor fit as this trip provides very little opportunity for getting out minus going back all way you hiked in.
The itinerary is as follows:
• Camp out near the trail head on Friday night. Exact location TDB determined but it will be car camping.
• Start at the Rain Lake Trail head in the morning of Sat Oct 11 and hike to East End Lake . Distance 17.7 KM
• Day two we hike to Weed Lake Via Rainbow Lake. This will be a very long day! Distance 25.6 KM
• Day three a short and easy hike back to the cars. Distance 12.7 KM
Reservation fees are being gathered to cover the following
• $13 split evenly between all those who are coming. Your deposit assumes 9 are coming, $1.44
• $11.87 per person per night X 2 nights in the backcountry = $23.74
• $10 deposit towards the your Friday night accommodations.
• $1.62 PayPal transaction fee
=
$36.80
Additionally there will be cash needed for
• Friday nights accommodation (TBD)
• Gas money. Each car will split gas expenses equally between all passengers and driver.
• Cash for snacks for the drive
