Intro to Kayak Tripping

Do you already have basic kayak skills and are looking to plan a trip? Consider this event as a starting point to learn about “the basics” for day or overnight tripping using a kayak. This will be an opportunity to learn tried and true guidelines, add knowledge from other’s first hand experiences, both good and bad, and allow you to add to the tool box you will need to start advancing your skillset.

When:

May 30th Laurel Creek Conservation Area ~ 6:00 pm – ~ 8:00 pm

Cost:

Entry to Laurel Creek Conservation Area requires a day pass $6. If already a seasonal member of the Grand River Conservation Area that ticket will do.

Location:

Area 2 boat launch. Please park in the parking lot 50 meters from the lake.

Agenda:

6:00 - 6:30pm

  • check out examples of camping gear, kayaking gear, clothing, assorted trip accessories, etc.

  • Volunteers are welcome to share their knowledge, equipment, and experiences

  • feel welcome to bring your own dinner and/or snacks

6:30 - 8:00pm

  • Safety – gear, risk management (how many lemons are you allowed!?!?!), keeping your balance, what to expect if you capsize, emergency planning

  • Kayak Gear – boat types, paddles, spray skirt, bilge pump, etc

  • Camping gear – packing light, size matters, methods of packing

  • Planning – maps, GPS, weather, group dynamics, transportation, rentals

  • Clothing/Personal gear– for weather conditions, for overnight, tips and tricks

8:00pm

  • bring your own kayak if you would like to paddle

  • question and answer session
