QEW, Canoeing to Jordan Lake

Sat, Jun 16, 2018 · 10:30 AM – Sun, Jun 17 · Queen Elizabeth II Wildlands

If you are looking for a challenge this may be your opportunity. QEW is a rare location, a non-operating park. As a result it is often times a lot more primitive than other parks with grown in trails and rough unimproved campsites.

That plan is to start at the Devils Lake parking lot and paddle to Jordan Lake. There are a number of portages (Longest 1400M, total about 3000M) we will encounter along the way so a light boat is recommend.

I have traveled most of the planned route before and it was quite passable though some of my companions considered it rough. If the group is moving well we may elect to go down the Head River to Crooked Lake which has a large collection of beaver damns to navigate.

Here is a map of the area.

This park is a wetland so plan for very heavy bug pressure. I will bring a bug room to hang up in camp so we should have some relief overnight. Additionally be prepared for no privy.

Deposits a being taken to ensure people show up. They will be returned in full to anyone who goes on the trip.

The plan is to meet Saturday in the Devils Lake parking lot at 10:30 and get onto the water by 11AM.

I am planning on renting a boat form Swift Canoe in in Gravenhurst, about 1 hour away; they open at 9AM. You can also try renting from Algonquin Outfitters in Minden, they open at 10AM.

The following spreadsheet can be used to arrange logistics (car-pools, boars, and gear).

I will assign car pools and boats Tuesday night.

Please note, registration closes Monday morning!
