Canoe trip Barron Canyon- Algonquin east

Fri, Jul 26, 2024 · 3:00 PM – Sun, Jul 28 · Algonquin Provincial Park

Paddle up this canyon on the eastern part of algonquin park with 100m cliffs that was carved by the last ice age meltwater.
It's a solid 6.5hr drive from KW, and the last 50km is a gravel road. plan to take the friday off and leave early. that will give enough time to hike up the top of the cliff and see our canoe route at the bottom of the canyon. then paddle to the base campsite on Stratton lake.

Itinerary

  1. friday: pick up access pass at sand lake gate. head to the lookout trail and hike to the top of the cliff, then head to the Achray campground for put in on Grand lake. paddle to Stratton lk (about 1hr, with a 30m portage)
  2. saturday: day trip to the canyon. pack the essentials. there are like 8 portages on the way there and 5 back, some just 15m. longest is 730m. we have the whole day, so the pace will be slow/moderate. there are a number of cascades & waterfalls on the way.
  3. sunday: paddle back to grand lake & achray campground

Number of portages: 17 (going there & back)

Difficulty: moderate.
the paddling is on flat water. pack the essentials for the day trip and chose a lightweight canoe to make your life easier

Fees: it's roughly $30 each, depending on the number of people

Maps: i used kevin callan's guidebook "top 60 canoe routes of ontario"
jeff's maps

Outfitters: algonquin portage store
