Snowshoeing Bruce National Park

Sat, Jan 11, 2025 · 11:00 AM – Sun, Jan 12 · Bruce Peninsula National Park

Lets start the 2025 with a nice "warm up" winter trip in Bruce National Park. Break lose from the post holiday slump, shoulder your backpack, and strap on your snowshoes.

We'll starting at the Cyprus Lake campground.
From there head to Horse Lake and onward to the Bruce trail.
Once on the Bruce trail we head South towards Stomhaven.
Along the way we'll be going in and out of the treeline as well as up and down in some slightly challenging areas.
Lots of views of the iconic Bruce coastline will be had along the way.

We should arrive at Stormhaven early afternoon. We will stay on the upper sites and make use of the tent pads. After finishing unpacking there should be time to explore, build snow furniture(snow permitting), or kick back and relax.

Come morning wake up with the crisp air all around and make some warm food. Then it's time to break camp and head back to to the cars and drive home.

Difficulty::

This is an Intermediate level meetup due to the winter conditions. There is not time being made for instruction so participants are expected to to know how to handle winter conditions without help. That said, if you have car camping down in the winter this might be a great way to start backpacking. Put another way, this is a easy WINTER trip.

If you have no winter experience please start with the beginners winter camping course (Date still TBD) first.

Campfires are not permitted in the Bruce National Park Backcountry. Everyone will be "cold camping".

Gear requirements:

You will need to make water by melting snow on your stove. Most canister stoves perform very poorly in winter conditions, white gas fueled stoves are recommended. Also, remember to bring extra fuel to melt snow.

The route is along the exposed shoreline for several stretches, you should have the ability to protect yourself from the wind including face covering.

There are some more hints on gear that might be needed here.

Logistics:

Plan to meet at the P2 parking lot in Bruce National Park around 11AM.

These maps show where that parking lot is located.

Money:

I will be collecting $14.50 of which $13.50 is for the campsite fee and $1 goes to PayPal. In additional each car should split the overnight parking fee, $13.25, as well gas costs, evenly.
Please note: The park may adjust their fee schedule in January. If so I may ask for the difference on the trip. I will let you know ahead of time if this is the case.
