What to pack for winter backpacking

Sat, Jan 18, 2025 · 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM · Kitchener–Waterloo

Have you always wondered how to enjoy camping through the winter? Maybe you went on a trip in high school and you are just getting feeling back in your toes but you want to try again. ;)

If you are interested in extending your outdoor travel into winter this is the class for you, and I promise your toes will be fine.

This is the first part of a two-part course. In this we will be talk about

  • The unique challenges of winter travel and camping
  • The clothing and equipment you will need to travel safely and comfortably

These will be calibrated to what it take to have a successful winter backpacking trip in Southern Ontario.

In part two we spend the night in the woods and and learn the skills needed to stay warm and travel. That trip will happen on weekend of Feb 8th. You MUST attend this class to be eligible to join the trip.

All are welcome to come to the class in Waterloo but those who are not already comfortable and competent hiking on multi-day 3 season trips will find some of the content incomplete or confusing. This event will only cover things that are different in winter. There will not be time to cover basic skills and knowledge.

There will be time after the presentation to ask questions and look at examples of the gear I use.

If you want to join the trip, you are required to have prior experience and familiarity with summer backpacking. I will not be discussing topics relevant to summer camping.

You should start packing early; there is a packing list on the trip event page.

Please support the Huether who offers their space to us by purchasing a drink or snack.

I hope to see you there.

How to find us: We will be upstairs on the Second floor of the Barley Works
