Maggie Lake Snowshoeing and Winter Camping
Beautiful sunsets, pristine snow and fresh air, and stargazing from the middle of frozen Maggie Lake. Could be one of the last opportunities for winter camping this season. This is approximately 11 kms of varied terrain. Depending on snow conditions, snowshoeing with with your pack, and the length of time (estimated 5-7 hours), this is considered to be an intermediate trip. Plan is to meet at the West Gate of Algonquin Park at 9am to get permits, etc.. Start the hike at 9:30am at the trailhead of the Western Uplands.
We will return Sunday morning via the same route. Starting our return at 9am, we should be back to the car(s) around mid to late afternoon for the drive back to KW.
Option 1: Leave KW Saturday at 5:30am and go direct to the West Gate of the park.
Option 2: Leave KW Friday 7pm and stay at Econolodge in Huntsville (approx. $65 for a double room). Continental breakfast included (you can even make your own waffles!).
Specific Equipment required for the trip: snowshoes, hiking poles, sleeping bag appropriate for winter temperature, a thermos or two is helpful to keep water from freezing, dry warm clothes for sitting around the camp after the day's hike.
If snowshoe rental is required, Adventure Guide, MEC (Barrie) are possibilities.
