Backpacking Western Uplands Trail

To celebrate the worst of the bug season done with by mid August (okay, what bug season this year??) we swing back into backpacking with a trip around Maggie Lake on the Western Uplands Trail. Saturday we get a good start at 10am and cover about 14km of rugged trail as we head up to the east side of Maggie Lake. We will camp on the north east side of Maggie Lake. Swimming for those who want to cool off after a satisfying and challenging hike. Sunday morning we follow the shoreline to complete the circle around Maggie Lake and then back out the way we came in, covering almost 17km. The trip is very pretty, passing no fewer than 6 lakes including Maple Leaf, Little Hardy and Steeprise. Lots of opportunities to replenish water supplies.
Ontario Outdoor website describes Western Uplands: “This area contains the best examples of Algonquin’s hardwood forests. You can also expect to see beaver, moose and, occasionally, you may hear the howling of wolves. The trail is rated moderate to strenuous.”
Skill Level:
Probably not a trip for beginners due to distance covered each day and the rugged terrain. Lots of ups and downs. Approximate hiking time each day is 6-7 hours.
Cost:
for camping: Backcountry permit $11.75 per person per night (plus a portion of the reservation fee for the site)
for gas: about $25-$30 per person if car pooling (driver decides)
Departure: Depending on preferences, we can head up to Algonquin and car camp on Fri. Aug. 17.
Waiting List: A waiting list is available. Due to the limit of number of people per backcountry site, I booked two sites. If someone is unable to come you will be moved from waiting to "going".
